From the national data on the coronavirus pandemic, it can be said that even after a lockdown of more than 2 months, the upward trend is getting stronger day by day. Daily count as well as growth rates both are increasing even after a bigger base. This situation is not good at all and slowly India is moving in the direction of western countries. Four cities, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Ahmedabad are the biggest hotspots in the country contributing 47% of national covid19 cases. It makes this fight against COVID19 a long drawn battle. However, there is only one good news that the mortality rate is falling with every passing day and is expected to remain below 2%. Because of the possibility of a low mortality rate states like are favouring herd immunity than the continued lockdown. The fall in recovery rate is natural.

Repo Rate Cut Will Help to Increase Demand

RBI has cut the repo rate by 40 basis points to bring it to 4%. It is a good and positive monetary response from the central bank to boost the demand in the economy. Coupled with a moratorium, the rate cut will result in more money in the hands of consumers to spend. Although, for the banking sector, it is not that good news and will have to face the brunt of this decision. The increasing moratorium period will not only have a negative impact on banks’ earnings in the short run but also on the NPAs as well in the long run. Apart from this the government has to get ready to recapitalize the banks in the next two years. At present the government needs to bring the lost confidence back to the people so that they start spending rather than saving for the unseen future.

Book Review: Be Social: Building Brand You Online by Karthik Srinivasan

Can social media be useful for a common man? There would be very few who will have an affirmative answer to this peculiar question (I guess). At first, it is completely a weird question for most of the people as they know social media as a way to just spend time. Not just to spend but perhaps kill the time! According to most of the people, they simply are addicted for no fruitful purpose. Still it is a kind of lifeline and keeps them engaged and relieves them from FOMO (fear of missing out). They truthfully accept. No excuses!

Although, there is almost a consensus among most of the people that social media has no real value to life and is hardly of any use! At least I believed so for sure. It can be a useful tool in one’s endeavours, was simply a question outside the syllabi before I got into the pages of this book!

Will Economic Relief Package Prove Relief to MSMEs?

The economic relief package of ₹20 Lakh crores includes the money to be spent through fiscal as well as monetary policy responses. However, the actual money that the government would directly be spending to boost economic activities would be around ₹6 Lakh crores; far less than the announced ₹20 Lakh crores. It does not mean that the amount of ₹20 Lakh crores is a token amount. The government through these measures wants to actually increase liquidity by ₹20 Lakh crores in the economy over time. Monetary policy response route is being taken because the government needs to manage fiscal deficit so that there are no significant negative consequences on the front of exchange rate and inflation.

COVID19: Headlines Management in Delhi

It is really very sad and unfortunate to find out that a democratically elected government fails to even maintain the integrity of data, however it is not something new. Previously many governments (states and centre) have intentionally been involved in such practices. Similarly Delhi government seems to be intentionally under reporting the daily data relating to Covid19 confirmed cases as well death toll with the sole purpose of avoiding any negative news headline!

On 8th May 2020 total confirmed cases in Delhi was 562 but the Delhi government published this data in two phases in two days. On 8th May 2020, the government released data that claimed that the total numbers of new confirmed cases in Delhi were 338. It was really good and relaxing to see a decline in daily confirmed cases. But on 9th May evening the Delhi government released a set of data that claimed 224 confirmed cases.

Avalanche in the Name of secularism

The Chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission, Mr Zafarul-Islam Khan in his a social media post finds that Zakir Naik is a hero who is respected across the globe in Muslim world! He is praising a person to everyone’s astonishment who is accused of and being investigated for his alleged role in Dhaka bomb blast in 2016 by Indian security establishments. He has been absconding from India for the last four years. At first place, it is surprising that the person who is responsible to ensure that the minorities in Delhi are treated well and equally is championing a person who is charged for his extremist views that are capable of turning youth into terrorists at least in two terror attacks; one in Bangladesh and the other one in Sri Lanka in 2019!
